The Door That Changes Its Mind
Garage Door Sensor Repair in Tigard, OR
Safety sensor repair fixes the photo eyes that stop your door from closing on people, pets, and cars. When they misbehave, the door reverses for no visible reason. Usually a small fix, always an important one.
- Typical market cost: $85 to $180
- Required equipment since 1993
- Often fixed in a single short visit
Try These Two Minutes of Free Fixes First
We would rather you fix this for free than pay us to wipe a lens. Before booking: clean both lenses with a soft cloth, clear cobwebs and leaf litter from the beam path, and look at the indicator lights. Both should glow steady. If one flickers when you press gently on its bracket, the bracket has loosened; square it up by hand and watch the light. That solves a meaningful share of sensor calls in two minutes.
If the lights will not settle, the wall button only closes the door while held, or the door reverses at the same time every sunny evening, that is where we come in.
What a Sensor Visit Covers
- Beam alignment with the brackets squared and locked, not just nudged until the light comes on.
- Wire path inspection from eyes to opener head. Staples, rodents, and door springs all snack on sensor wire.
- Voltage check at the opener terminals to separate eye failures from logic board failures.
- Replacement with brand-matched eyes when lenses have yellowed or internals have failed.
- Sun-glare mitigation for west-facing garages: side-swapping the eyes or adding shade hoods.
- A full safety-reverse test, both the beam interrupt and the 2-inch contact reversal.
Why We Take This Small Job Seriously
Photo eyes have been mandatory on every residential opener sold in the US since 1993 under the UL 325 safety standard, for one reason: the force settings on an opener are a backup, not the plan. The beam is what stops a closing door before it touches anything at all. A bypassed or taped-over sensor is the single most dangerous shortcut in the garage, and we decline to leave a door that way.
Fast Across the Whole Footprint
Sensor calls are quick, so they slot easily into same-day routes through Tigard, King City, Metzger, and Aloha. If the eyes test fine but the door still reverses, the fault usually moves up to the opener logic, covered under opener repair. And if the door reverses only after touching the floor, that is a travel-limit adjustment we handle on the same visit.
Sensor Questions
Why does my garage door go back up when I try to close it?
The photo-eye sensors near the floor think something is in the way. A blocked lens, dust, spider webs, a nudge from a broom, sagging brackets, or direct sun glare all trigger the safety reverse. If both sensor lights are not glowing steady, alignment is the first suspect and often the whole fix.
How much does garage door sensor repair cost?
Realignment and rewiring visits typically run $85 to $150 in the Portland market, and full sensor replacement usually lands between $120 and $180 including parts. If the fault is in the opener board rather than the eyes, we tell you before the quote so nothing is replaced on a guess.
Can I bypass my garage door sensors to make the door close?
Holding the wall button does force-close most openers, but permanently bypassing sensors is dangerous and defeats a system required on all openers made since 1993 under UL 325. Sensors exist to stop a 130 to 350 pound door from closing on a child, a pet, or a bumper. Fix them, do not fool them.
One sensor light is green and the other is off. What does that mean?
On most brands the sending eye glows steady while the receiving eye lights only when it sees the beam. A dark or blinking receiver means blockage, misalignment, or a broken wire. Wipe both lenses, check the beam path, and gently square the brackets. If the light will not go steady, the wiring or eye itself has failed.
Does afternoon sun really affect garage door sensors?
Yes, and west-facing garages around Tigard and Aloha see it most. Low evening sun can flood the receiving eye and mimic a blocked beam, so the door refuses to close at exactly 6 PM in summer. Swapping the sender and receiver sides or adding shade hoods usually cures it permanently.
Door Refusing to Close?
Try the lens wipe first. If the lights will not behave, we are open until 8 tonight.
